PUBLICHEALTH
45
The main goal of the Public Health program is to educate, and
promote the health of, the population groups which PRAKSIS
assists, and also the general population at large. The program
activities are carried out through:
•
Street interventions (streetwork)
•
Informational campaigns (HIV, Hepatitis A, B, C)
•
Informational discussions in schools, prisons and care
communities for dependent people
•
Educational seminars on issues in which the institution is
specialized
PRAKSIS operates activities regularly through this program in
order to inform the public and conduct tests for HIV and Hep-
atitis B and C. Specially trained volunteers and members of
PRAKSIS systematically inform the public about HIV, Hepatitis,
and sexually transmitted infections, through excursions to vari-
ous places in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras.
Moreover, these programs enable those who wish to take a free
and anonymous rapid test for HIV and Hepatitis C, which also
is available at the Polyclinics in Athens and Thessaloniki, the
Accommodation Center for Unaccompanied Minors in Patras
and the Daily Reception Center for Homeless People in Athens.
Part of the Public Health’s program is the interface and the
creation of a network of cooperation between the PRAKSIS
and other organizations and bodies for a larger expansion of
operations and their more targeted and successful realization.
Consequently, in cooperation with specialized agencies, such
as KETHEA, PRAKSIS organizes seminars for drug users, with
topics such as:
•
Harm reduction techniques
•
Information on various forms of Hepatitis
•
Information about HIV
•
First aid
•
The effects of drugs
Such information is provided in detention facilities as well, both
to prisoners and the staff of the institutions, upon request either
of the institutions themselves or the bodies that are involved in
respective areas.
At the same time, in Accommodation Centers where immi-
grants and asylum seekers live, PRAKSIS provides informa-
tion on hygiene and transmitted infections. Information of this
type (hygiene, first aid, transmitted diseases) is also provided
at schools and institutions of higher education at the request of
the institutions’ directors.
