POST-
RELEASE
CENTER
Released prisoners represent a rather vulnerable social group
that intensely faces social exclusion, on the one hand because
of the stigma that stems from having being imprisoned and
on the other because of their alienation from the social reality.
PRAKSIS,in an effort to respond to the increased needs of this
specific target group, operates the Post Release Center in Ath-
ens.
The main goal of the Post Release Center is to provide services
and to develop appropriate networks so that the rehabilitation
of men and women ex-prisoners is effective. Services include
psychosocial support, legal information and counseling, as well
as medical and pharmaceutical care. The aim of the program is
to address the needs of the released prisoners in a holistic way
and to also support their family environment. A key element of
the program is the development of strategic partnerships with
related entities and programs of the local or wider community in
order to bring multiple benefits for promoting the rights of this
particular target group.
For the period of this report, 105 people arrived at PRAKSIS
and received information about the services of the Post Re-
lease Center. Out of these, 65 people received more than one
service, and the majority of those were men aged from 26 to 50
who had come either from Europe or Africa. The most common
requests concerned legal, labor and medical matters while in
many cases there were especially urgent requests for housing
issue because the support network for the beneficiaries was
non-existent.
