ANNUAL ACTIVITY REPORT 2013 - page 63

SYN STO PLIN
63
THE CONTEXT
The economic crisis completed its sixth year in the middle of
2013, creating the need for direct relief measures for the ever-
increasing population that seems to suffer on a greater scale.
Examples are mentioned below:
The prospect of disallowing the protection of primary resi-
dences from foreclosure, even with conditions, threatens
300,000 households with homelessness.
One in three housing loans is delinquent.
40% of the working population has suffered reductions to
their income while 55% has suffered reductions of income
due to the increase of taxes.
According to the data that was published on December 2013,
350,000 households have had their electricity disconnected,
and out of those only 140,000 have resolved their problems
and had their power reconnected while 35,000 other house-
holds have been registered as owing the electricity company
despite the disconnection, which means that they’re using
electricity illegally.
THE INITIATIVE
The “SYN STO PLIN” Program is an innovative and, for Greece,
one of a kind initiative, planned by both the “Stavros Niarchos
Foundation” (
) and PRAKSIS.
The Social Housing program of “SYN STO PLIN” focuses on pro-
viding financial aid and counseling support, with the direct goal
of preserving the autonomy of each family. The operation of the
Homeless Day Center constitutes the other side of “SYN STO
PLIN”, as it is mainly about relief. The program contributes to
the relief of an especially vulnerable population group, which ex-
periences intensely and rather harshly the consequences of the
crisis on every day basis.
