1996
Medicins Sans Frontieres Greece (MSF) creates the first Polyclinic
is created in Athens, providing primary medical facilities to migrants
and refugees.
1997
MSF opened a second Polyclinic in Thessaloniki. At the same time,
a pan-Hellenic research mission takes place, aiming to register the
remaining populations that are not included in the social welfare
networks and who lack basic medical services.
1998
On the occasion of the voteon the first Presidential decrees, which
opens the way for legal counseling of migrants, MSF initiates
the Legal Counseling of Migrants and Refugees program (Legal
Information Centers)in Athens and Thessaloniki.
1999
Following an initial epidemiological analysis of the medical cases of
the two Polyclinics, the Public Health Program begins operating in
both cities (Athens and Thessaloniki).
Research into the needs and problems faced by Romas in the area
of Evosmos of Thessaloniki takes place.
Volunteers and executives of Athens begin their interventions at
the Open Therapeutic Program “Diavasi”.
Volunteers of the Greek programs participate in providing
assistance to victims of the earthquakes.
2000
A research program about the children living on the street of
Thessaloniki begins. Its important findings, and the lack of effective
interventions, pave the way for the design of a program for this
target group.
Research is conducted at the Korydallos Prison in order to
investigate and register the characteristics and needs regarding
living and health conditions of the inmates.
2001
The “Children the Next Door” program begins.
A program at the Korydallos Prisons begins conducting interventions
for health promotion and mobilisation of both inmates and workers
through seminars and information on health issues (transmittable
diseases and damage reduction from drug use) take place.
In Athens, at the Center of Multiple Intervention of KETHEA (Therapy
Center for Dependent Individuals), educational programs regarding
reduction of damage from drug use are conducted.
2002
The intervention program at the Korydallos Prisons continues,
aiming to deliver speeches to the inmates regarding first aid,
transmittable diseases, reduction of damage from drug use, and
re-integration.
The participation in the first cycle of three “Equal” programs is
initiated:
“Anadrasi-Istos”, a program for those seeking asylum, “Nemesis”,
a program for the rights and the smooth re-integration of inmates
and ex-inmates, and “Forum”, a program for social cohesion,
against xenophobia and racism.The implementation of the Action
Plan of Accompanying Support Services also begins: “Productive
Integration Space for Migrants and Refugees” (targeting a group of
60 migrants and 60 refugees).
2003
Programs within borders are involved in the informal network for
trafficking as well as in the Greek Forum for AIDS and Mobility.
Missions to different points of entry of migrants and refugees take
place and legal, psychological and health services are provided.
