A 13-year-old boy from Afghanistan visited the Drop–
In Center. Day after day, he was making efforts to
travel illegally to Italy. After a certain period of time,
he expressed his discomfort and fear of daily trying
to leave the country illegally and under such risky
conditions. After research and individual meetings,
PRAKSIS determined that the minor’s family was
in Athens without legal documents. A social worker
from the Drop–In Center communicated with the
family, presenting to them the minor’s current state
as well as the dangerous and unsuitable conditions
under which was living. The family was neither tak-
ing a stand nor co–operating with PRAKSIS so as
to find a solution towards the minor’s best interest.
After a few days the minor was arrested by police
authorities in Aigio and was registered as an adult.
An intervention was made on the spot and PRAK-
SIS worked along with the police authorities so as to
ensure the correct registration of his personal data.
PRAKSIS came in contact with his family and his
mother came to Patras. The minor was handed over
to his mother and the whole family returned to Ath-
ens, where they found support in the Polyclinics and
applied for asylum and housing. In the intervening
period, the mother left illegally for Germany, while
the minor along with his three younger siblings and
father stayed behind. An application for family reuni-
fication was made which has now been accepted by
Germany.
