PROTECTING CHILDREN ON THE MOVE
One of the primary actions of the Drop–In Center team is
streetwork. Streetwork aims on the one hand to identify
unaccompanied minors and their living conditions, and
on the other hand to effectively familiarize them with
the Day Center facility for the issues that concern them.
The team that goes out for streetwork consists of social
scientists and social intermediators.
Another main part of the program operation is networking
with the local authorities, other organizations and entities.
In order for the intervention to become more effective and
achieve a holistic management of the cases, cooperation
with other organizations on a national and international
level as well as with the local authorities is necessary.
In this manner, the current situation is identified and
recorded in more detail.
The main principle of the program is to serve the best
interests of the children. Thus, the Drop-In Center
provides personalized case management, taking into
account the vulnerability of each case, the wishes and
the specific needs of the individual. In this framework,
a child protection mechanism is brought into action
through their safe conduct, their temporary housing, and
their reference to appropriate solidarity structures.
The hopes of the interdisciplinary team of the Drop–In
Center in Patras are for a boost in their manpower, and
the enrichment of their experience and their intervention
instruments. The team’s vision and source of inspiration
is for them to become a body that brings substantive
changes in the field of the minors’ protection and
ensuring more humane living and developing conditions
for them.
