EMERGENCY INTERVENTIONS
SUPPORTING VULNERABLE PEOPLEWHONEED
INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION ATPOINTSOF
ENTRY,ASWELL AS IN REGIONSWITH LARGE
CONCENTRATIONSOF TARGET GROUPS
The program titled “Supporting Vulnerable People who need
international protection at Points of Entry, as well as in regions
with large concentrations of Target Groups”was implemented by
PRAKSIS in collaborationwithMdM-Greece (coordinating partner)
and NGO Med In (partner) from 01/02/2013 to 31/04/2013. The
program is consistent with the aims and priorities of the European
Refugee Fund in the framework of the Emergency Measures
2012 of the European Refugee Fund as well as the National
Priorities concerning the conditions for receiving immigrants.
Priority and emphasis is put on providing primary medical care
and psychosocial and legal support to foreigners who may need
international protection and who are located in the regions of
Northern Greece, Thessaloniki, Poroia, Promachonas, Paranesti,
Igoumenitsa, Patras and the Dodecanese.
In recent years, the population of immigrants and of those seeking
asylum who enter Greece has come to a large extent from
regions with generalized violence, instability and poverty such as
Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Somalia, Senegal and other
African countries. This population is medically vulnerable due to
risk factors associated with the conditions in their countries of
origin, primarily the exposure to violence and inadequate access
to health services. This population of immigrants and of those
seeking asylum is additionally vulnerable due to their arduous and
often dangerous travel to Europe.
The evaluation and treatment of the medical needs of this specific
population and the recognition of vulnerable cases which need
special aid requires running a system of diagnosis and early
detection (screening). This system necessarily includes the
clinical examination of the whole population and the possibility
of an initial evaluation of the mental health condition of groups
within the population. Considering the conditions under which
we act, the medical activity should be understood in a broader
sense. In actuality, it involves all the hygienic problems that puts
the health of both the individual and the population in danger,
such as access to clean water, toilets etc.
