THIRD-COUNTRY NATIONALS
PROGRAMS FOR THE LEARNING OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE,
GREEK HISTORY AND GREEK CIVILIZATION FOR ADULTS IMMIGRANTS,
“FROM ALPHA TO OMEGA.”
PRAKSIS operated the project titled ”From Alpha to Omega”
from October 2012 to June 2013. The effort was co-financed by
the European Fund for the Integration of Third-Country Nation-
als and the Interior Ministry within the framework of Priority 1:
Implementation of the actions for the application of the com-
mon basic principles for the policy of the integration of immi-
grants in the European Union, in the framework of Action 1.3/11:
”Education and training of third-country nationals legally resid-
ing in Greece”, Task 1.3a/11: Programs for the learning of the
Greek language, Greek history and Greek civilization for adult
immigrants.
In the framework of this action, courses of Hellenic language,
Hellenic history and Hellenic civilization for adult immigrants
were offered out in eight large cities in Greece (Athens, Piraeus,
Salonica, Patras, Larissa, Chania, Kozani, Rhodes). The lessons
were conducted from March to June 2013, lasting 140 hours,
and their main goal was to enrich the communicative knowl-
edge and the skills of the immigrants in the Greek language so
as to vitally reinforce their course of integration.
In all, PRAKSIS held a cycle of seminars with 6 classes in Ath-
ens, 3 in Thessaloniki and Larissa, 2 classes in Patras, and 1
class in Kozani, Pireaus, Rhodes and Chania.
The target group of the project was adult male and female im-
migrants – third-country nationals whose domicile has a perma-
nent and stable character. The courses corresponded to three
different levels, depending on students’ already-existing knowl-
edge of the educational subject: [a] beginners, [b] intermedi-
ate, and [c] advanced. The course levels were designed so as
to fully correspond to the requirements of the certification of
language testing of the Center of Greek Language. In this man-
ner, the trainees had the opportunity to develop their education
proceeding certification procedures organized by the Center
of Greek Language. To facilitate attendance at the lessons for
male and female immigrants who care for children, the program
included a room specially equipped and staffed with special-
ized teachers for the safekeeping and creative activity of the
children.
