The design of the program includes the following steps:
•
Cooperation – networking with organizations and groups
that are active in the target populations.
•
Mapping – geographical designation of the areas of Athens
that the target population movements – identification of hid-
den/new spots of activity.
•
Assurance of the required authorizations – agreements with
competent bodies (Municipalities, Prefectures, Ministries) as
far as the spots of intervention (squares, stations, parks).
•
Design and production of informational materials.
•
Design of the program of HIV screening.
•
Implementation of programmed street work in the center of
Athens.
•
Organization of mobile units and primary care clinics for ex-
amination and counseling for HIV infection.
•
Function of a 24 hour phone-line of help to provide medical
counseling on questions of HIV infection and STDs for mem-
bers of the target population.
•
Provision of healthcare and counseling about HIV infections
and STDs in an outpatient environment (mobile units, places
of where target population members congregate).
A man from Palestine, 45 years old, seropositive with
Hepatitis C, drug user without a family or friendly envi-
ronment in Greece, released from prison. He was ob-
served by the teams in the “Agios Pavlos” Prison Hos-
pital. When he was released from prison, he came to
the organization with the request to obtain documents
to go into the program, to be connected to an Infection
Unit and to be housed. He spoke to the lawyer and he
is in the process of being issued documents. Before he
went to prison, he petitioned theOrganization Against
Drugs OKANA. He was referred to OKANA, and his num-
ber called, and the next day he entered the program. He
was connected to the Infection Control Unit of Evange-
lismos Hospital and he regularly keeps his appointments
and his treatment. He has released from prison for three
months and he stays either in dormitories or in the street.
In a few days, though, he will move into a hotel that is
leased by OKANA.
