IMPLEMENTATION
OF THE EUROPEAN
AGENDA FOR
ADULT LEARNING
The strategy “Europe 2020” for smart, sustainable and
inclusive growth characterizes the lifelong learning and
skills development as particularly important elements
to address the current economic crisis, the aging of the
population and the wider economic and social strategy of
the European Union.
The “Implementation of the European Agenda for Adult
Learning” program is duly registered as belonging to this
strategy and has as goals the implementation of lifelong
learning and the mobility; the improvement of quality and
the effectiveness of the training and education; the pro-
motion of equality, social cohesion and the active partici-
pation in citizenship; and the strengthening of innovation,
creativity, andthe enterprising spirit in all levels of training
and education.
One of the fundamental aims of the program is the crea-
tion of a network at the national level that covers all the
aspects of adult learning, especially targeting adults with
low educational qualifications and abilities, young people
without training,education or jobs, as well as vulnerable
social groups (unemployed, single-parent families, refu-
gees, asylum seekers, Roma, prisoners, those released
from prison, the addicted, individuals with special needs
or who live in distant areas, poor people, homeless).
The main activities of the program are seminars or/and
focus groups mainly at the regional and local level that
aim, among others things, at:
The increase and amplification of the participation of
adults in life-long learning,
Improvements their literacy and numeracy skills, and the
development of skills in the area of digital technology,
The increase in the provision of adult learning and the
encouragement of adults in the acquisition of knowl-
edge as a means of strengthening the social integra-
tion and the active participation in the community as
well as in society, and
The awareness and provision of incentives, especial-
ly for people that leave school prematurely, to com-
plete higher levels of education.
The program is implemented by the General Secretariat of
Lifelong Learning with the financing from the Educational
Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) of the
European Committee with the participation – as partners
– of PRAKSIS, of the Center for the Development of Edu-
cational Policy of the ΓΣΕΕ, the General Confederation
of Professional Craftsmen of Greece (ΓΣΕΒΕΕ) and the
Municipality of Thessaloniki. The program will conclude
in December 2014.
